SLTC e-Newsletter

Winter, 2008

Happy New Year!!! Welcome to the Winter 2008 issue of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Speech and Language Technical Committee (SLTC) e-Newsletter. The SLTC has survived the ICASSP review process with record of 618 submissions to Speech and Spoken Language Processing, and we are looking forward to a great conference in Las Vegas.

This issue brings you seven articles describing the latest news in the speech and language research communities. We've got four articles that describe SLTC-related news, including a welcome message from SLTC Chair Roberto Pieraccini, news of SLTC member elections, and updates from ASRU and ICASSP. You can also read about the History of Speech and Language Technology Project, an overview of Question Answering, and the controversial real-world use of Voice Stress Analysis software for deception detection in the UK.

We would like to say a big thank you to our external contributors to this issue: Tatsuya Kawahara and Roberto Pieraccini.

As always, we welcome your contributions of news, events, publications, workshops, and career information to the newsletter.  Please send all articles, ideas, and feedback to the SLTC e-Newsletter Editorial Board [speechnewseds <at> ieee <dot> org].
