Welcome to the January 2007 issue of the IEEE Signal Processing Society
Speech and Language
Technical Committee (SLTC) e-Newsletter.
The beginning of the new year marks a period of
transition for the SLTC. The end of 2006 marked the end of the term of
SLTC Chairperson Mazin Gilbert. Mazin fostered a tremendous amount of
positive change to the SLTC during his term, and we wish to express our sincere
thanks to him for all of his hard work and dedication. We also had five
committee members whose terms concluded at the end of 2006. We thank Michiel
Bacchiani, Alan Black, Bill Byrne, Tatsuya Kawahara,
and Jean-Pierre Martens
for their service on the SLTC. As announced in the previous newsletter, we are
very happy to welcome Roberto Pieraccini as the new Chairperson and 13
new members to the SLTC.
This issue of the newsletter features a wide range of
articles, including messages from past and current SLTC Chairs, Mazin and
Roberto, news of the latest happenings in the speech and language communities,
and an interesting look at life on the other side of the digital divide. We would like to welcome our newest Student Reporter
to the newsletter staff, Antonio Roque, a PhD student from
USC. Finally, a big thank you to the external contributors to this issue, listed
to the left.
As always, we welcome your contributions of news,
events, publications, workshops, and career information to the newsletter.
Please send all articles, ideas, and feedback to the SLTC e-Newsletter Editorial
