PhD position in Image and Video Forensics

The Visual Information Processing and Protection research group led by Prof. Mauro Barni at the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematics of the University of Siena is currently looking for a PhD student in Multimedia Forensics, with particular reference to: "Development of machine learning techniques for image and video forensics in adversarial setting".

The use of machine learning for image and video forensics is gaining consensus also due to the possibilities offered by modern techniques based on deep architecture. The security of such techniques in the presence of an adversary applying counter-forensics methods to imped the analysis, however, it still unknown. The goal of the present research is to: i) investigate the security of machine-learning tools for multimedia forensics, ii) develop counter-forensic attacks against state-of-the-art techniques, iii) develop a new class of security-enhanced multimedia forensic techniques based on machine learning.

The activity will be part of a research project financed by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, USA) that is going to start in June and is expected to last 4 years, and hence will offer to the candidates the possibility of worldwide interaction with other research groups involved in the same project.

Perspective candidates must hold a master degree in ICT (or should expect to get it by September 30, 2016) or related disciplines, be able to program in Matlab and C, possess basic knowledge in image processing and statistical signal processing and speak English or Italian proficiently. Knowledge of basic machine learning principles is appreciated.

The VIPP group provides a stimulating, collaborative and research intensive environment to carry out edge research on diverse topics in multimedia security. VIPP members carry out their research in the LTT laboratory of the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematics. The working language of the group is English.

Starting date: Fall 2016

Selection of candidates will undergo a formal recruiting process as stated by Italian law (to be announced soon), however candidates are encouraged to submit a preliminary expression of interest to Prof. Barni by filling the following online form.
